Kitten Suffers Extreme Case Of Abuse
December 28, 2007

KENT COUNTY — A shocking case of animal cruelty discovered after the Kent County Humane Society rescued a kitten whose ears had been cut off.

The kitten is currently recovering, but people at the Humane Society want to figure out how something like this could happen.

Last week, someone found the 4-month-old stray, with big green eyes and black stripes at a gas station near M-37 and Peach Ridge. She was in bad shape, missing both of her tiny ears after someone cut them off.

The Kent County Humane Society called it a definite case of intentional abuse.

Workers still don't know who did it, but believe the abuse happened recently.

"We think that she also has some internal injuries. It looks like they may have stepped on her, dragged her along the pavement," said Karen Terpstra, Executive Director of the Kent County Humane Society.

What was left of Eeyore's ears fell off, but she didn't lose all of her hearing. It's just not as sharp.

But the road ahead is still filled with struggles. Eeyore is taking antibiotics and she's scheduled for surgery to treat a hernia.

In the meantime, she's become a staff favorite, and showed signs of improvement and trust.

Soon, Eeyore will be up for adoption and looking for a good home. Humane Society workers said her case is a reminder to always report animal abuse and neglect because it does make a difference.

"It makes me sad and it lets me know that our job isn't done. There's lots of education to do and lots of animals to help. We really need the public to help us," said Terpstra.

If you would like to adopt Eeyore or other pets, you can call the Humane Society or go to their website. We have a link set up in our "Newslinks" section.
