Neighborhood Worried About Multiple Break-Ins
August 6, 2008
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. —
Neighbors are on alert after a string of Break-ins in Grand Rapids.
Some of them happened Tuesday, on National Night Out, a night aimed at preventing crime.
At least 6 cars along Fountain Street were broken into.
"We have bells on the front door so I heard them open the first time, then the second time about 20 minutes later, it was really quiet and I heard the front door slam and the bells went after the door slammed, said Carmen Kemper.
Carmen's neighbor, Joe Clemens, a retires marine who just moved in last month had a similar incident.
"My car alarm starts going off, and I run downstairs and I see someone getting ready to drop my window on the side of my house and I chased them off," said Clemens.
No one knows if the same thief returned or if another targeted the neighborhood Tuesday night.
Roxanne Boggs could tell something was wrong as she approached her car.
"My glove box was wide open, the center console was wide open, a lot of things were missing out of my car."
Other neighborhoods nearby are also seeing an increase in car break-ins.
Neighborhood watch organizers are getting the word out, don't leave anything of value in your car.
Police tell us they don't know if a trend is emerging but also say lock your car doors and homes, and flip on the porch light.
