Detroit Mayor Charged With Perjury; He Says He Will Be Exonerated

March 24, 2008, 2:16 PM EDT

DETROIT (AP) — Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick says he's looking forward to "complete exoneration."

Kilpatrick was charged today with perjury and other counts, for allegedly lying under oath when he denied that he and former top aide Christine Beatty had been having an affair.

Sexually-explicit text messages that later surfaced appeared to cast doubt on his testimony.

Kilpatrick, reading a prepared statement to reporters, said he'll be cleared "once all the facts surrounding this matter have been brought forth."

He says he's "deeply disappointed" that he's been charged, but that he's not surprised.

His lawyer says he recommended to Kilpatrick that he not resign.

Beatty also is charged with perjury and obstruction of justice.
