Children love to play outside in the winter.
Prevent Head Injuries
Sledding is great fun. The #1 injury related to sledding at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital is head injuries, so wearing a helmet should be as common as hats and gloves. Always have your child wear a helmet while sledding, skating and playing other winter sports.
Sledding Safety Tips
▪ Help your child choose a hill that's away from trees, rocks, traffic, water and other obstacles.
▪ Make sure the sled is in good condition.
▪ Check for handholds and steering that works properly.
▪ Never allow your child to ride on a sled being pulled by a car or a snowmobile.
▪ Remind your child to only sled sitting up with their feet forward.
Snowmobile Safety Tips
When snowmobiling, everyone should wear a helmet designed for high speed motor sports. Children under age six should not be allowed on snowmobiles and those under age sixteen should not be allowed to drive.
Have Fun!
Winter is a great time for your children to be outside enjoying themselves. Have fun with them and participate in their winter activities.
